Welcome to “The Art of Tutoring,” a wide-ranging newsletter that looks at the world of K-12 education from the perspective of a veteran New York City tutor.
This is not a gossip magazine, and I do not intend to tell tales about the living rooms of the rich and famous. Rather, I will explore many of the issues that K-12 families routinely face and I will offer a framework for understanding the tutoring process that I have developed from nearly two decades of working with students from New York City public and private schools, as well as from boarding schools across the country. I will present some history (going back to the Ancient Greeks), a bit of education policy, a smidgen of social commentary, some anecdotes, some reactions to headline news, and some critiques of the numerous books and articles published every year about education.
The landscape of American education is constantly changing, and increasingly, students and families are turning to tutors for support. This newsletter discusses the rise of tutoring and explains to parents what a tutoring process should—and should not—aim to accomplish.
I hope you subscribe and enjoy!
